Car Won't Start? 7 Common Causes & Quick Fixes

Craig Sandeman7 min read

If you have turned the key (or pressed the button) and nothing happens — or your engine cranks but will not fire — there are seven common causes. Most of them can be diagnosed and fixed on-site by a mobile auto electrician, so you do not need to arrange a tow truck. Here is what to check and what each fix typically costs in Durban.

1. Dead or Weak Battery

This is the number one reason cars will not start. You turn the key and hear a rapid clicking, or the dashboard lights are dim, or absolutely nothing happens. Batteries have a lifespan of roughly 2 to 4 years in South African conditions — and as Arrive Alive highlights, keeping your vehicle in safe working order is critical on South African roads. In Durban specifically, the heat and humidity shorten battery life further.

Quick check: Turn on your headlights. If they are dim or will not turn on at all, your battery is flat or dead.

On-site fix: We carry batteries on our service vehicle and can test, jump-start, or replace your battery at your location. Battery replacement in Durban: R1,200 – R2,500 fitted, depending on the size and brand.

2. Faulty Starter Motor

If you turn the key and hear a single click (or nothing), but your dashboard lights are bright, the starter motor is the likely suspect. The starter is an electric motor that cranks your engine. Over time, the internal components wear out or the solenoid fails.

Quick check: Listen for a single loud click when you turn the key. Sometimes tapping the starter with a wrench can get it going temporarily — but that is only a temporary fix.

On-site fix: Yes — starter motor replacement is a common on-site job. We carry common starter motors or source one quickly from a Durban parts supplier. Cost: R1,500 – R3,500 depending on the vehicle.

3. Fuel Pump Failure

If your engine cranks normally (the whirring sound is strong) but will not fire, fuel might not be reaching the engine. The fuel pump, located inside the fuel tank on most modern cars, pushes petrol to the injectors. When it fails, the engine gets no fuel.

Quick check: Turn the ignition to the "on" position (without starting) and listen for a faint humming from the back of the car. No hum could mean the pump is not priming.

On-site fix: Fuel pump replacement can usually be done on-site. Cost: R2,000 – R4,500 depending on the vehicle and whether it is in-tank.

4. Alternator Problem

The alternator charges your battery while the engine runs. If it fails, your battery drains and eventually the car will not start. You might notice dimming headlights or the battery warning light on the dashboard before it dies completely.

Quick check: If you recently jump-started the car and it died again shortly after, the alternator is not charging the battery.

On-site fix: Alternator replacement is a standard on-site repair. Cost: R2,000 – R5,000 depending on the vehicle. We test the charging system before and after replacement.

5. Ignition Switch Fault

The ignition switch is the electrical component behind the key barrel. When it fails, turning the key does not send the signal to the starter. This is more common on older vehicles with higher mileage.

Quick check: If your dashboard lights flicker or behave erratically when you turn the key, or the car starts intermittently, the ignition switch may be faulty.

On-site fix: Yes, this can be replaced on-site. Cost: R800 – R2,000.

6. Clogged Fuel Filter

A blocked fuel filter restricts fuel flow to the engine. The car may crank and try to start, or it may start briefly and then stall. Fuel filters should be replaced as part of a regular car service, but many drivers overlook them.

Quick check: If your car has been struggling to accelerate or hesitating at higher speeds before it stopped starting, a fuel filter is a strong suspect.

On-site fix: Quick and inexpensive — R300 – R800 for the filter and labour.

7. Immobiliser or Key Fob Issue

Modern cars have immobiliser systems that prevent the engine from starting without the correct key signal. If the battery in your key fob is flat, or the immobiliser module has a fault, the car will not recognise the key and refuse to start. You will usually see a key or immobiliser icon on the dashboard.

Quick check: Try holding the key fob against the start button (on push-start cars) or replace the key fob battery (usually a CR2032 coin cell).

On-site fix: Key fob battery replacement is immediate. More complex immobiliser faults may require professional diagnostic equipment, which we carry. Cost: R50 for a fob battery to R500–R2,000 for an immobiliser diagnosis and reset.

Durban Humidity and Battery Corrosion

Durban's humid coastal climate is particularly tough on batteries and electrical connections. Salt-laden air accelerates corrosion on battery terminals, leading to poor connections even on relatively new batteries. If you live near the coast — Umhlanga, Durban North, Umdloti, or the Bluff — check your battery terminals every few months. A wire brush and some terminal protector spray goes a long way.

What We Can Fix On-Site vs What Needs Towing

The good news: roughly 95% of no-start situations can be resolved on-site by a mobile mechanic. We carry diagnostic tools, common parts, and the experience to get you moving quickly. The rare exceptions that need towing to a workshop include major engine seizure, internal transmission failure, or structural damage from an accident.

If you are stuck in your driveway in Morningside, at the shops in Ballito, or in a car park along the M4 — we come to you, diagnose the fault, and fix it on the spot in most cases.
